Yasumasa Morimura

Yasumasa Morimura is a Japanese appropriation artist, born in Osaka and a Kyoto  City University of Arts graduate. The basic characteristic of his work is that he borrows themes from various famous paintings and artists like Manet, Frida Kahlo or Rembrandt, inserting his own face and body in them.

Although his work has been characterized as provocative or even kitschy it has been exhibited in great museums and galleries worldwide like the Museum of Contemporary Art at Chicago, the Cartier Foundation of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art at San Diego and many more.

He was nominated with the Hugo Boss prize in 1996.
